Why Curing is Critical for Concrete Strength

Curing is the process of maintaining adequate moisture and temperature in concrete during its early stages so that it can develop its designed strength.

The Hydration Process

Concrete hardens due to a chemical reaction called hydration. If the water evaporates too quickly, hydration stops, leaving the concrete weak and prone to cracking.

Common Curing Methods

  • Ponding: Creating small clay ponds on flat surfaces and filling them with water.
  • Wet Covering: Using wet gunny bags or hessian cloth to cover columns and walls.
  • Curing Compounds: Spraying chemicals that form a membrane to prevent moisture loss.
